***Part of Balancing Acts: A Mother's Journey at Braemar Gallery in Springwood 1st May-1st June.
Official opening Saturday 3rd 2-4pm***
I painted this in a series of 4. I wanted them to be about stereotypes, labels, mother guilt, balancing life and the wisdom you gain from growing older.
When I sat with this woman after she was finished, I was thinking of all the stereotypes we are given as women and mothers. Stereotypes given to those who have chosen to have kids, chosen not to have kids or have had that choice made for them out of their control.
Sometimes it feels like a constant battle to prove your worth whatever your choice. A battle towards others and ourselves. I feel like we fall into those untruths and forget that we are more than the labels people give us.
I can only speak to stereotypes of mothers, being a mum of 3. The one that drives me nuts is that we should be a martyr to our kids and family. I think that is why I work so hard to show my kids that I have passions too and am clear with my "me time" boundaries. I love being a mum but that is not only who I am.
What are the stereotypes in your situation? Are there some you sink into? Are there some you rebel against?
Take a look through all the photos to see how it was made starting outside in my garden with our bearded dragon watching on.
